Greetings

Here is news affecting each of us in some way

1. FUNDRAISING. Once again we have been asked by Lake Ridge Elementary to assist in their annual Spring Carnival. The school has approx 550 students however many parents choose to assist their students during this event rather than volunteer for helping run the event. A few years ago they had the band run their little concession stand and it was a win-win for all involved. It is a great way to help build the student account which is definitely a good thing now as we all plan for our spring trips! LET ME REPEAT THAT: As we run the concessions it allows those band students and parents involved to put a significant amount in to their student account.

This year’s carnival is Saturday March 12th. This is already a busy day for our Band as it is Festival. There are those students and parents however that will already be finished with their portion of Festival that can do this and need to step up and volunteer so they will not give this opportunity to another organization.

The carnival runs for four hours 10am to 2PM Band shifts will be 9-12 and 11:45-2:45

We need 3 adults and 2-3 students for 3 hour shifts. This is over the lunch time so many will buy lunch/snacks

Also credit ($ to you account)) will be given to whomever runs the coordinating of food pick up from Sams Club and supplies from our storage room ( I will be training at my new job and can't do it this year)

(I’ll help with the fax and Pull)

We will serve Chick-Fil-A, Pizza, Nachos (if Michelle can get us a nacho machine and cheese from the Patriot Center) chips, and dessert if the school doesn’t do cookies and may be hot dogs as well as drinks

And a small amount of breakfast (coffee and muffins)

Below I have place a grid for volunteers please fill in your name and return to me as soon as possible. Id like to have all volunteers in place no later than Feb 25th so I can give this info to Lake Ridge Elementary PTO.

2. PEARMAN BABY NEWS. Just Arrived on Saturday February 19, 2005 6:36PM, Michael Alexander Pearman!

Michael weighed 7lbs 8ozs and was 20 inches long at birth. He has a full head of brown hair and eyes that are sometimes brown, sometimes grey depending upon the light. Both mom and baby are in good health after a labor of only 10 hours and 50 minutes. Delivery was normal and she did not have to be induced. Epidurals are a beautiful thing. Dad survived the entire labor and delivery without hurling or passing out, which is a miracle, although he came close near the end. God is Good and saw us through!

Thanks to all that send prayers, gifts at showers, and well-wishes. We will go home on Monday and I should be back to school by Thursday. We have lots of family members coming to help so our home may be a bit hectic for awhile

3. FIREWORKS. This past week, the superintendent and assistant superintendents met to discuss among other things the sale of fireworks on school grounds. Fortunately, Mr. Ross had a little advance warning enabling your booster board to prepare a point paper. The point paper was accepted and well received. Thanks to Jim Wykle, Christine Wykle and Ranelle Nadeau for their help with pertinent data on fireworks. Special thanks to Larry Wheeler who helped me pull it together and have it make sense. Although we will again be able to sell fireworks in 2005, it is not all certain that we will be able to sell them in 2006.

4. BOOSTER MEETING. There will be a March booster meeting on Thursday, March 10. Please come. We will be discussing trips and plans for the remainder of the school year. We also need to start thinking about alternate revenue streams since we lost the circus this year and may lose fireworks next year. If you have ideas, please give Mary Weiss a call or come to the meeting.

5. TRIP PAYMENTS. The second installment of payments is due 1 March. For the Disney Honors group, $275 is the installment. For the Concert group going to Williamsburg/Virginia Beach, $75 is the installment.

6. WINTER CONCERT. The winter concert will be March 3. It will be a great time to hear the bands. We will also use this opportunity to help one of our families. Amanda Chase's brother, Jason (a 2001 WSHS grad.), has been stricken with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Jason's parents will be there to raise funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Please donate.

Greetings

In the Board’s effort to keep all boosters informed, we need to inform you of a change. As many of you know, for many years the circus, sponsored by the boosters, has come to WSHS in late April. This will no longer happen.

How did we get here? There are a number of circumstances and reasons. We have had for many years and requested again the same weekend in late April. We also got the necessary permission to use the school grounds on those dates. The circus decided to give those dates to an organization in Manassas. When we tried to object, we were offered two substitute dates. WSHS was not available on one and the circus gave the other away, even though we got back to them quickly. Then the circus decided to locate at Potomac Mills over Mother’s Day weekend this year.

We were subsequently offered a chance to participate at Potomac Mills as long as we provided the police security, trash removal, water and all the necessary permits. (My guess is that Potomac Mills is providing the parking lot).

When the contract finally arrived from the circus, there were other changes. In the past, the boosters received a percentage of the advance ticket sales and a percentage of the walk-up gate as long as we sold enough advance tickets. (We have always sold more than required for the top percentage of the walk-up gate.) The current contract reduced our percentage of the advance sale and eliminated the entire walk-up gate.

Financially, in order to keep our income from the circus where it was last year, we would need to sell about $34,000.00 in advanced tickets while Potomac Mills will also sell tickets. In all the available records, WSHS, as the sole advance ticket seller, has never sold anywhere near that number of tickets. Not only that, the contract did not specify how many tickets we would receive and whether we would get any desirable seat locations.

Our assessment is that there is a very real chance that the boosters could lose money on this contract.

So your board has voted not to accept the contract as presented. The implied message from the circus was take this contract or else. My guess is that the circus wants a bigger venue with more visibility and a more pliable partner.

Even though we were longtime partners with the circus, I guess they did not value our partnership. No where in this entire episode has there been any bright light except for George Ruwisch. George has kept after this since last April. Thanks so much for all your efforts George.

How do we handle the loss of this fundraiser? Good question. If you have ideas please come to the booster meeting or contact our fundraising chair, Mary Weiss.

As always, feel free to contact me.

Greetings

I finally have the number of folks who are going to Disney Honors. Final arrangements will be made for flights on Monday. The lady I have to deal with is not in today.

These are the students:

Names Omitted!

I am missing three commitment forms: Karsten, Beth and Clarissa. I need them no kidding Monday morning – please bring them to the band room prior to school

The following parents are Chaperones:

Sylvester Jefferson
Ed Bayne
Mary Weiss - Nurse
Janet McDonough
Sherry Smith
Karen Wedmark
Robin Moore

The following folks have signed up as Tag Alongs:

Junior Jefferson
Phil Gray
Terry Gray
Bruce Purdy
Sarah Purdy
Denise Work – flight only
Joe McDonough
Son McDonough

Costs for Chaperones and Tag Alongs will be provided Monday.

If you are counting, include Mr. Pearman and myself. We will be taking 66 folks. Shannon Fairbank will be meeting us there.

If for some reason, you or your student cannot go, please let me and Mr. Pearman know ASAP.

Thanks

Greetings

In order to finish making arrangements for the trip to Orlando in April, I need to know exactly which students are going.

I have attached the commitment form for those of you who need it. The second page has the payment schedule. The firm amount will be $800 in three payments.

For your advance planning, the flight schedule is below:

Wednesday, 13 Apr 05
Flight DH 10
Depart: Washington-Dulles, VA (IAD) 10:45 am
Arrive: Orlando, FL (MCO) 12:59 pm

Sunday, 17 Apr 05
Flight DH 6
Depart: Orlando, FL (MCO) 7:45 am
Arrive: Washington-Dulles, VA (IAD) 9:55 am

We will meet at Dulles Airport in the early morning of April 13. The reason that there will not be transportation to Dulles is that the cost of buses to and from is over $3000.00. We did not want to pass on that extra amount onto you parents. You will also have to pick your kids up at the airport.

We will still inspect bags to make sure that no contraband is taken; only we will do it in Orlando.

Thanks for help

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me - 703-497-2513

Somehow in the hustle and bustle to get the newsletter out, my original thank you document was inadvertently transmitted before it was final, leaving out some important credits for the WVI.

My personal “With Pride” award goes to George Ruwisch Sr. for his outstanding electrical expertise and effort. Despite being very ill, George identified which circuits could handle what loads, keeping the outdoor concession stand completely operational and then helped us transition back into the school.

Thank you, George for all your help.

Sincerely

A Wayfaring Song
by
Henry van Dyke

O who will walk a mile with me
Along life’s merry way?
A comrade blithe and full of glee,
Who dares to laugh out loud and free
And let his frolic fancy play,
Like a happy child, through the flowers gay
That fill the field and fringe the way
Where he walks a mile with me.

And who will walk a mile with me
Along life’s weary way?
A friend whose heart has eyes to see
The stars shine out o’er the darkening lea,
And the quiet rest at the end o’ the day-
A friend who knows, and dares to say,

The brave, sweet words that cheer the way
Where he walks a mile with me.

With such a comrade, such a friend,
I fain would walk till journey’s end,
Through summer sunshine, winter rain,
And then?-Farewell, we shall meet again!

About The Viking Invitational-

I feel like a million friends walked the weary way with me on Saturday! I am deeply humbled and extremely grateful to each and every one of you that helped me with everything to do with the concession stand. We set it up, tore it down, set it up once more and managed to feed many hungry students, parents and visitors. Your commitment to support me in this endeavor went well beyond any expectations. Our band and choral students were simply magnificent! And, since I cannot even begin to name a complete list of helpers, let me say I am so proud to know all of you. Your generosity and can-do attitude helped our band organization flourish despite inclement conditions.

My sister, even though she was busy repairing hurricane damage to her own home, flew up from West Palm Beach to help us. Thank you Annie!

I would like to say a special thank-you to Mr. Ross for his presence and willingness to pitch in and help with whatever situation he could. Mr. Ross is simply a wonderful person and major asset to Woodbridge.

I’d also like to thank Larry Wheeler for his dedication and superb guidance. Without him, this event could not have occurred.

As a final note, I missed Brandon Weiss, currently a freshman at ODU, helping us this year. Brandon was last year’s Band Captain and provided exceptional support to us time and again. I never publicly thanked Brandon and felt this may be the appropriate time to say “thank you” and I hope you’re doing well.

With sincere thanks to all of you.

Ranelle Nadeau, Secretary

Greetings

It has come to my attention that there have been complaints to the administration about the trip to Disneyworld.

It is certainly every parent's right to address issues concerning their child's high school experience. I am not trying to interfere with that right. What I would ask is that any issues you have concerning anything about the band be addressed first to the band director. As with any other class/activity, the first person that should be questioned is the teacher. Of course, if you are not satisfied with the response you have the right to address your issues to the administration.

As far as the trip itself. The band director requested the booster support for this trip almost six months ago. The support was granted. The opportunity to perform for and attend master classes with some of the most exceptional music instructors this country has to offer was judged to be a worthwhile opportunity. That examination of this opportunity was conducted separately by the boosters, the school administration, the superintendent's staff and ultimately by the school board itself. At each level, we were given the go ahead.

As far as I know, this is the only trip/educational opportunity where the kids will miss three school days to be approved last or this year in our county. That's how important an opportunity this is.

The boosters will not, however, force any family to lay out money for any trip they cannot afford. We can help, if you want your child to go and it is too expensive. If you need help, you do need to talk to me or Christine Wykle, the treasurer.

We will have a meeting about this trip on Jan 5. We do need to know who is going and who is not.

As always, it is about the kids. Without your support, the kids inevitably suffer. Thanks for your support.
